Work on Your Fundamentals to Improve Your Range
Work on Your Fundamentals to Improve Your Range is a practical trumpet book designed to help you develop your playing from the fundamentals up.
This first book brings together the ideas, exercises and concepts I have developed over the years through my own experience, trial and error, and my work with trumpet students.
The goal is not simply to give you more exercises to practise. The aim is to help you understand why you are doing each exercise, what you should be looking for and how it can contribute to your development as a trumpet player.
Rather than practising mechanically, we will work towards a more conscious, efficient and structured approach to trumpet practice.
The book develops a practice routine progressively, beginning with one of the most fundamental elements of trumpet playing: breathing and airflow.
From there, we apply those ideas to exercises and technical areas that can become part of your daily routine.
Throughout the book you will work on:
- Breathing and natural airflow.
- Vincent Cichowicz exercises.
- Clarke's Second Study.
- Major scales.
- Note connection and evenness.
- Articulation.
- Fingering and speed.
- Range development.
- Flexibility.
- A more conscious approach to practising.
- The mental side of trumpet playing.
One of the main ideas behind the book is that an exercise should never be practised simply because somebody told you to do it.
You need to understand its purpose.
The same exercise can be approached differently depending on what you are trying to develop. Throughout the book, I explain the process step by step so that you can become more aware of your sound, airflow, physical sensations and the way you approach the instrument.
The goal is to gradually make this way of playing feel more natural rather than relying on force or unnecessary tension.
Improving your upper register is one of the objectives of the book, but it is not treated as an isolated skill.
Before focusing specifically on expanding your range, we work on airflow, note connection, tone, articulation, fingering and efficiency.
Developing a comfortable range becomes much more difficult without strong technical foundations.
One of the concepts you will find throughout the book is what I call “Think in Reverse.”
The idea is to change how we mentally approach ascending and descending passages so that pitch changes do not automatically create more tension.
The objective is to maintain a smooth, connected line and avoid exaggerating the physical effort associated with playing higher.
This book is not intended to promise an instant solution to every trumpet problem.
It is a practical guide designed to help you understand fundamental concepts, identify habits that may be limiting your playing and develop a more structured approach to your daily practice.
Real changes take time. Some of the processes in the book need to be developed over weeks or months until the new sensations become more natural.
Technique is not the only subject covered in the book.
Towards the end, I also talk about the mental side of playing, some of the psychological difficulties I have experienced as a musician and the ideas that helped me work through them.
My aim is for the methodology, language and approach to practice throughout the book to encourage a healthier and more conscious relationship with the instrument.
This book is designed for trumpet players who want to:
- Build stronger technical fundamentals.
- Improve their range progressively.
- Develop better airflow.
- Create a more effective practice routine.
- Understand the purpose of the exercises they practise.
- Improve note connection, articulation and flexibility.
- Become more aware of how they play.
- Develop a more efficient and conscious approach to trumpet practice.
It can be useful both for students and for experienced trumpet players who feel they need to reorganise the foundations of their technique.
This is a digital edition. After completing your purchase, you will receive access to download the book so you can use it on your computer, tablet or mobile device alongside your daily trumpet practice.
Expanding your range is not just about trying to play higher notes.
It is about building a solid technical foundation, understanding what you are doing and developing a way of practising that allows you to progress efficiently.
Work on Your Fundamentals to Improve Your Range brings together the first part of that process.
